SMALL TO LARGE CIVIL ENGINEERING
For customers who say...

Our civil engineering and related site consulting work covers residential lots (simple drainage plans), or flood plain sites requiring more involved storm water mitigation, and when required conveyance analysis.  For most project we work in traditional 2D AutoCAD.  If we think it can create value we can also accurately model topographic information in Revit 3D as shown below.

 

Larger commercial Harris and Ft. Bend County sites typically require more involved detention basin design with pipe flow hydraulic analysis. Occasionally a site can benefit from a Low Impact Design  or L.I.D. design with landscaped swales and bio-basins. 


 

Here is an example of a typical simple 1 page residential drainage plan now required from most new home projects.

If helpful we can coordinate all survey and topographic information. For commercial projects, we also design detention basins, parking lots, and heavy load industrial working pavement areas. We then develop the construction permit plans and details for drainage, storm water mitigation, detention/retention volumes, grading, and landscaping.

Below are photos of a 6+ acre industrial oil field equipment site development project in Harris County (early Jan 2013). ECO provided both civil engineering (storm water mitigation with detention basin) and structural engineering (foundations and anchorage design for 4 steel buildings). We also designed the the office headquarters building foundation and wood and steel framing..

 

ECO provided the civil engineering for the site drainage including a pumped detention system design, retention design for a dry hydrant for fire fighting water, and landscaping design.

For this project ECO provided an option for a Low Impact Development (L.I.D.) design in which storm water mitigation was managed by a system of  underground detention modules, grassy wild flower detention swales, and a landscaped detention pond.

 

 


 

SITE DESIGN CONSULTING

Civil consulting services vary based on the site specific requirements for a county, city, or community project. We can start with a preliminary SketchUp or AutoCAD layout based only on a survey or online mapping. It can include locations of water, storm, and sanitary lines, overhead utilities routing, and sun studies for solar PV arrays. These early site layouts help define impervious areas and lot percentages required for storm water mitigation design.


If needed, this can be expanded into a 3D site model for items like solar array sun studies or to visualize a landscaping layout.
 

Site design consulting can include Low Impact Design (LID) requirements used to reduce on-site detention volumes. This can include detention bio-swales, underground detention, rainwater harvesting, black/gray water separation, rain water pervious parking systems, pollution prevention planning, and on-site composting/recycling. The following is ECO's LID site concept used for early planning.




SITE CIVIL CONSULTING
A site civil plan will normally include topographic data and storm water mitigation data. It should accurately defines setbacks, easements, and footprints. Site items like pools, patios, buildings, fences, gates, benches, tables, shading devices, trees, utility locations, and drainage components are all defined with construction details. Additional civil site services can include grading design, stakeout, and post construction inspections.

SITE STORM WATER MANAGEMENT

Storm water detention can be on the surface as a detention ponds, or underground an area like a parking lot, or a combination of both.

ECO will determine the location and depth of  connection points for water, sanitary waste water, and storm water utilities. Lines sizes and required slopes are determined and added to your plans. Cut profiles are provided to assist plumbing contractors.

 
While we regularly design bigger items like detention ponds, we also know the importance of correct and smart construction detailing. One of the small areas we see done incorrectly over and over again are curb cuts for yard drainage. If it is designed and detailed correctly, it be built correctly and will function correctly for the life of the project.

If it is not design and detailed correctly, you can get nonfunctional designs and sometimes quite funny designs that will cause problems and will need to be replaced again later over and over again.
